Engineering is the result of applying scientific knowledge and using natural laws and physical resources to design and make materials, structures, machines, devices etc., and processes that safely make a desired objective and follow certain standards. The American Engineer's Council for Professional Development or ECPD have defined engineering as;

"The creative application of scientific principles to design or develop structures, machines, apparatus, or manufacturing processes, or works utilizing them singly or in combination; or to construct or operate the same with full cognizance(understanding) of their design; or to forecast their behavior under specific operating conditions; all as respects an intended function, economics of operation and safety to life and property."

Civil Engineering is mostly recognized as the first or parent of the other forms of engineering. Such as Mechanical engineering, Chemical engineering, Electrical engineering and so forth. Engineering was perhaps first defined in 1828 when the Institution of Civil Engineers was established in London. Over time the word civil engineering became restricted to only a static nature such as roads and tunnels. Engineers who focused on primarily moving machinery became known as Mechanical engineers thus Mechanical engineering was born. By 1928 the meaning of engineering was refined to be "the professional and systematic application or science to the efficient utilization of natural resources to produce wealth".

Some one who practices engineering is called an engineer, and the ones licensed to do so may have a more distinguishing title such as European Engineer, Professional Engineer, Chartered Engineer, or Incorporated Engineer. The discipline of engineering cover a large range of more focused areas each with in its own more specific focus on specific fields of application and particular areas of technology.

The "concept" of engineering has been around since ancient times as humans devised fundamental inventions such as the wheel, lever and pulley. Each of the following listed have something to do with today's modern definition of engineering. That being, searching for basic mechanical principles to make useful tools and objects.

The word itself is a branch off of the word engine which most likely comes from the Latin word "ingenium". The early engineer was mostly used in making and operating engines of war (such as catapults, battering rams )and devising defences against them. The root of the word engineer and the Latin word ingenium both mean to do, to act or to make. So a scientist's goal is to know and a engineer's goal is to do. So both are needed to fit with each other because engineers apply science to there work.

When I looked up "engineering" this is what I got.
" The art or science of making practical application of knowledge of pure science, as physics or chemistry, as in the construction of engines, bridges, buildings, mines, ships and chemical plants."
The word "engineer" means.
" Someone who trained to design and build machines, vehicles, bridges, roads, or other structures."
The word "science" means.
" The study of nature and the physical world by testing, experimenting, and measuring.
The word "math" is just a shorter word for "mathematics" meaning.
" The study of numbers, quantities, shapes, and measurements and how they related to each other."

What is your topic? My topic for this project was engineering.
What do you want to understand about this topic that you did not before? I want to understand the relationship between mathamatics and engineering better.
How will you apply this new knowledge? I dont know how I will apply this to my life but it is an interesting subject.
How does this topic apply to everyday life? You can see it everywhere you look. Road, trains, planes, cars and houses its everywhere so I will use it everyday.
What will you seek to analyze in order to provide new knowledge for your audience? I wish to analize the connection to engineering, science and math.
Establish the value of this topic now, before you do your research. Does it have value to you as a team, or to society, or a certain people group etc. Engineering is a big part of the world around us and it is thanks engineers for the house we live in and the cars we drive and such.
